Spore FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)
When is Spore going to be released?
There are rumors for either 2006 fall or 2007. Most likely to be Fall '06, some people are claiming it will be in 2007 though. All non PC versions have been confirmed to be coming out in 2007. Latest release date information here
What are the minimum specifications for Spore?
Who is developing Spore?
Will Wright's team, at Maxis.
What platforms and consoles is Spore going to be released on?
Other than PC, which is what it has been announced to be released on, there are rumors it shall be released on Xbox 360, and a handheld platform. Update: Although the rumors of the Xbox 360 version of Spore have died down, it has been confirmed for DS/PSP and Mobile Phones (cell phones). See Spore Confirmed for DS, PSP, and Phones
What kind of things can you make in Spore?
The list of things you can create include: UFOs, buildings, vehicles, creatures, cities, and plants
Is Spore an online only game?
No, not at all. But using it online lets you download custom user created content. But on the CD when it is released, there will be more than enough creatures, items, vehicles etc to keep you happy. As each creature's data file size is just a few KB, just a few MB's of creature data is more than enough to hold thousands of different creatures.
Will there be a monthly fee to play Spore online?
No, as it isn't like most other online games. The online part of the game, which can be turned off, is just for transferring content (creatures, vehicles etc) really.
Can you die in Spore?
We don't know. Nothing has been mentioned about the death of your own creature/species.
Can I use a dial up modem (56k) to access the downloadable content?
Yes. Because of the tiny files, just a few kilobytes, it will be very quick, even on the slowest of dial up connections!
What is the Plant Editor?
Although we don't really know what the plant editor in Spore is going to be, we do know that it will only be available when you have a UFO. Once you have the UFO, you can research into "genetic engineering".
How does your Spore creature grow and evolve?
It is thought that as you eat, you will gain more "points", leading to an egg, which will then allow you to change characteristics of the creature.
Is Spore the final name? I heard it was only a development name...
As far as we know, yes, "Spore" is the final name. The actual official name will probably be written on the box as "Will Wright's Spore". It was originally going to be called Sim Everything, but they decided that Spore sounded better!
How varied will the creatures be?
As varied as you can make them really. You can make flying carnivore creatures, vegetarian underwater creatures, or almost anything else you can create.
Tell me about the creature's skin ...
Well, we know that they will have skin. And also almost certainly will have fur, feathers and scales.
