About Spore
About Spore - Basic InformationSpore is the next game to be released by Will Wright (of SimCity and The Sims fame), and is being developed by Maxis, & published by EA. The game was originally going to be called "Sim Everything" which makes sense, as you start off with a single cell species, and in the end the game develops to allow you to start to mould a society.
Even though the game isn't even any where near finished, at 2005's E3 it managed to pick up the following awards: Best of Show, Best Original Game, Best PC Game, and Best Simulation.
One of the quite interesting facts is that unlike almost every other game on the market, the world of Spore is "procedurally generated", which basically means the computer makes the majority of the game world itself, thus not requiring the developers to model and map out every single feature of it. Not only does this have the obvious advantage of less man hours developing the game, but also means that players can customize their game world and creatures as much as they like.

Will Wright - Source
In a demo that Will Wright showed, he explained and demonstrated how he could make a tripedal creature, with a prehensile tail. He then showed how the game basically works out how a creature like this could walk, and attack, and even in that early development stage of the game, it looked fantastic. There was also even a Carebear style creature in that demonstration!
In the final game, it is expected that there will be several stages. Tide pool, Evolution, Tribal, City, Civilization, and a Space Exploration stage. Each one of these stages relates quite similarly to another, well known game – for example, the Tide pool being like Pacman, Tribal Stage like Populous, City stage like Sim city and more.
Spore will also innovate a "massively single player online game" (as opposed to "massively multi player online game" as found in many games now). Creatures, vehicles and buildings that are created by other players are automatically uploaded to a database, then are redistributed throughout other players environments. So while the player won't actually see other players' creatures in Spore being controlled real time by other online players, their creations will appear on other players game world. The file sizes of these Spore creations are expected to be approx 1 kilobyte.
This system is rumored to become very handy. If in a new eco system, a new flying creature is required, the game will just download another creature from the databases cataloge. Other things, such as tanks, boats, aircraft and even UFOs will be distributed through this system.
The game is also rumored to be coming out on a portable format, and Xbox 360.
